Lessons Learnt At Augusta – Top Tips From the Pros at the Masters in 2010

As usual the latest big event in the golf calendar has become another history maker as Phil Mickleson won his third and most emotional green blazer, dedicated to his wife who had recently been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Aside from the winner there were many other stories from the weekend such as the return of Tiger Woods as well as many other golfers being in the running for the green jacket especially as the tournament came to a close on Sunday evening.

As with any game of golf there are lessons to be learnt, and we'vell picked three golfers from the tournament who have inspired a number of lessons that could apply to all golfers regardless of ability.

Phil Mickleson
Phil's ability to bounce back from the occasional poor shot was definitely what helped him seal the victory; one shot in particular found Phil's ball placed almost completely behind a tall pine tree off the fairway. Being left handed Phil had no other choice but to fire the shot blindly from behind the tree. The shot landed under two metres away from the flag prompting a vigorous fist pump from Mickleson.

The lesson here has to be that even in the worst lie possible there is still the opportunity to turn the tables and get back into the lead.

Tiger Woods
As Tiger's first professional tournament since 2009 and his return back to golf after a much publicised stint in rehab there weren't many people believing he'd walk right back in to the top spot. Tiger had a frustrating game at times on Sunday in particular, as always the "Sunday Tiger" showed signs of that rallying spirit but frequently lost composure and verbally chastised himself on a few occasions.

This player's lesson has to be that no matter how poorly you think you're playing just make sure you enjoy playing. Learn from your mistakes but don't get frustrated, this will affect your shots.

Fred Couples
Fred had performed well over the weekend, but it was Fred's interesting choice of footwear that has drawn the most headlines. Fred's big achievement during the tournament though had to be his impressing percentage of fairways hit at 80.36%. This stat means that the majority of Couples' tee shots were finding the target and landing on the fairway, something many golfers struggled with (see previous golfer, Tiger Woods).

The key lesson in this case is that you should make sure that your tee shots are not just powerful but accurate also. A shorter yet more controlled tee shot landing on the fairway is much preferred to a powerful tee shot that lands in the trees.
